INTRODUCTION.
THE object of the following work is to preserve from destruction the contents of a record which has hitherto been confined to an unique manuscript, the loss of which would be irreparable.
The illustrative foot notes will show how valuable is the additional evidence to be drawn from wills, court rolls, and other like documents, in tracing pedigrees and the transfers of property. Moreover, in publishing early parochial registers, an authentic contribution is supplied to the history of a locality, and may assist the larger enquiry as to facts and personages, out of whom the story of a nation is formed.
It may be observed, with slighting attention, that these registers principally refer to the families of what Shakspeare calls " crestless yeomen " — which is a stock nevertheless that for centuries formed the backbone of English society, and from which also the greater part of the higher gentry have sprung. In these Registers some records occur of families who have thus advanced in social position.
The Churchwardens' Accounts, from 1520 to 1545, I have only just been in time to snatch from oblivion — they are written on paper, and are in a deplorably dilapidated state.
I have heartily to thank my father, the Rev. Alfred Gatty, D.D., Vicar of Ecclesfield and Subdean of York, &c., for allowing me to transcribe these early Registers and Church- wardens' Accounts ; also Michael J. Ellison, Esq., for giving me free access to the court rolls of the Manor of Hallamshire ; also H. A. Hudson, Esq., Deputy Registrar of the Will Office, York ; Canon Raine, of York ; John Sykes, Esq., M.D., of Doncaster ; Stephen I, Tucker, Esq., Rouge Croix, of the Heralds' College, London ; Charles Jackson, Esq., of Balby, Doncaster; and the Rev. J. W. Darnbrough, Rector of South Ottrington, Yorkshire, for their valuable assistance and information ; and last, but not least, J. D. Leader, Esq., F.S. A., for the interest he has taken, and the facilities he has afforded, in the publication of my work.
This, my first effort as an author, makes no pretensions to literary merit, but is a truthful statement of facts, offered in the most concise language, because the quantity of matter had to be condensed as much as possible, in order to keep the volume within a reasonable limit.
Although I cannot expect any general interest to be taken in the records of a country parish, in the centre of England, I am sure that it will find some local appreciation; and there will be here and there, in distant countries, an eye arrested by the sight of a name, which will remind its present owner that his family was once connected with the old Yorkshire village, and that his ancestors lie buried under the shadow of the " Minster of the Moors," as DoDswoRTH named the Parish Church of Ecclesfield.
Any clerical errors that may occur I must ask my readers to be lenient with.
ALFRED SCOTT GATTY.

It is not improbable that by this marriage the family of Carr became settled at Birley, but I cannot fill up the gap between William, living 1435, and John, living 1500. The present representative of the family is John Carr Fletcher, of Birley and Sheffield, son of the late Rev. w John Creswick was of Burrowlee, in this parish. His will is dated 21 May, 1604. la it he mentions, Nicholas Creswick, my 3rd son, devising to him my messuage in Ecelesfield, &o., with remainder to Gilbert Creswick, my 4th son, with remainder to Roger Creswick, my 5th son, with remainder to Edward or Edmund Creswick, my 6th son. My land at Haldworth to Roger Creswick, my 5th son, John Creswick, my 2nd son, my daughters Margaret and Frances Creswick, and Ann, wife of William Ward, Thomas Creswick, my hrother-in-law, &c. His eldest son was Thomas Creswick, of Burrowlee, who was baptized 8th Feb., 1375 ; this baptism is from the Creswick family Bible, now in the possession of the Rev. J. W. Damborough, rector of South Otterington, near Thirsk, who is a descendant of this family. It is impossible for me, owing to my limited space, to go into the history of the family of Creswick, which is one of the most ancient and respectable in this parish ; they are so to speak indigenous to the soil, springing from a hamlet called Creswick.
''Robert ShirecliSe was of Whitley Hall, 'in this parish; son of Richard Shirecliffe, of Ecelesfield. For a pedigree of this family, see Hunter's Hallamshire, Gatty's edition, pp. 446-7. It is represented by the Parkers of Sheffield, mentioned in note 9. Whitley Hall is now the seat of Thomas Henry Bingley, whose grandfather, William Bingley, of EUerslie Lodge, in the parish of Penistone, purchased it of Mary, relict of Benjamin Hammond, who had bought it of John Parker, sometime between 1803 and 1810.
