NEW WHITING INTRODUCTIONS FOR 1944
ARAB CHIEF—4175 (Raejean x Garden Magic) V. Late. 36 in. An iris of rich and brilliant colorine—very near to burnt orange. It is a pure self of intense color value, of large size, pleasing form and has exceptionally vigorous growing and blooming habits. $10.00
HARVEST MOON—4121 (Midwest Gem x Prairie Sunset) M. 34 in. This iris is very similar in coloring to Mellowglow, not quite as pink, and a bit more orange. The garden effect is much the same and we have been urged to introduce it so that taose who have not been able to get Mellowglow may have this glorious color in their gardens. A fairly large stock permits a moderate introductory price. $5.00
TEA ROSE—4127 (Matula x ‘China Maid) M. 36 in. Well on the road to pink is this smooth, creamy blend of rose ard pale gold. By Ridgway it is close to Alizarine pink over Capucine buff. The biending is very smocsth, giving the effect of a true self. Dictionary of Color has a plate called Rose Leaf which is very near. There is a tiny touch of pure blue at the tip of the light yellow beard which gives it distinction. This seedling was described by Dr. Franklin Cook in the October 1942 Bulletin as one of the most promising near pink seedlings he had seen. The plant has proved to be strong, prolific and completely hardy, with attractive foli- afeL LAWArCed anels- ©. iti e2o4o vinder nim bers4127; $15.00
THE RAVEN—4335 (Lilamani x Smolder) M. 86 in. We have long hoped for a really superior black purple iris among our seedlings, and we think we have it at last. It combines the rich and glowing color of Lilamani with the glossy finish and heavy substance of Smolder in a neatly flaring. slightly ruffled form. The flowers are Jarge and well syvacea, the plant exceptionally vigorous and hardy. $15.00
